The World Health Organization will contribute US$55,000 to provide clean and sterilized water to flood-ravaged provinces in central Vietnam.

It is assisting the Vietnamese Government with disease prevention efforts and the distribution of emergency relief to these localities.

Recent floods caused by torrential rain have devastated the central region, especially the provinces from Quang Binh to Phu Yen and central highland Gia Lai province. More than 220 medical clinics in the region have been damaged.

Local communities are facing serious shortages of food and drinks and pollution of water sources and environment, which poses great risk of acute diarrhoea, malaria, skin infections, eye diseases and other illnesses.

Experts say it would take several years for the central region to overcome the flood aftermath.
