Le Monde (World) newspaper of France on May 16 ran a news story about the signing of the US-Vietnam agreement on the latter’s entry to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The author said the bilateral agreement signed on May 13 paved the way for Vietnam to join the WTO this year and the event would help further promote trade and investment links between the two countries.

Trade US official Rob Portman was quoted by the author as saying that the agreement is considered an important historical landmark in US-Vietnam relations, especially as Vietnam has conducted comprehensive reforms and liberalised the national economy for its integration into the world economy. However, the immediate difficulty for Vietnam is to get approval from the US Congress for Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) status. Vietnam is now hoping to enter the WTO prior to the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Summit which will be held in Hanoi in November.
