Among the 8,620 domestic cases recorded, Ho Chi Minh City saw the highest number at 4,180, trailed by Binh Duong with 2,075, Long An with 544, Dong Nai with 456, Khanh Hoa with 335, Dong Thap with 146, Tien Giang with 123, and Ba Ria - Vung Tau with 115.

As of the evening of July 31, the country’s COVID-19 caseload stood at 145,686, including 2,239 imported cases

The number of domestic infections recorded during the latest wave of the pandemic has therefore hit 141,877, with 35,960 patients having recovered.

Furthermore, July 31 also saw an additional 3,250 COVID-19 patients discharged from hospital, thereby increasing the total number of recoveries to 38,734.

The same day the Treatment Subcommittee under the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced a further 145 fatalities relating to COVID-19 between July 19 and July 31 across six provinces and cities, with Ho Chi Minh City reporting the highest number at 90.

Four out of 62 provinces and cities have now gone 14 days without recording any fresh cases of local transmission, while 9 other provinces have recorded no secondary infections.

In terms of the ongoing vaccination rollout in Ho Chi Minh City, Duong Anh Duc, vice chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, said that after the end of the fifth vaccination drive, the city will immediately organise the sixth drive. This will continue until reaching the goal of covering at least two thirds of the local population over the age of 18.

"The city expects that the simplification of vaccination procedures will speed up the injection rate but still ensure the safety and health of the injectors," Duc said.

At present, the southern city has been granted 2,082,040 COVID-19 vaccines and is expected to receive more according to the allocation of the Ministry of Health in the near future.
