The U23 Vietnamese football team defeated Myanmar 5-0 in the opening match of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF)-EXimbank Cup at Hanoi’s National My Dinh Stadium on October 19.

The team dominated from the whistle, but did not open the scoring until the 32nd minute when Nguyen Van Quyet broke from the right wing to pass the ball to midfielder Hoang Thien who fired home.

Five minute later Thien picked up a rebound off a Myanmar defender and beat the goalie for the second time.

Captain Pham Thanh Luong evoked a nightmare for Myanmar with his pace and skill, and he was rewarded with a penalty after he was fouled in the box. Defender Ngoc Anh stepped up to convert the spot-kick in the dying seconds of the first half to make it 3-0.

Coach Falko Goetz made several changes at half time with the game already safe.

Defender Nguyen Trong Hoang and striker Dinh Tung joined Luong and Van Quyet in the attacking tactics and proved their worth in the 49th and then 88t minutes.

Myanmar striker Min Thu later had the ball in the back of the net but it was disallowed for offside.

Vietnam will meet Uzbekistan on October 21 who defeated Malaysia 3-1 in the earlier match.
