The capital city of Hanoi earned US$1.38 billion from exports in the first five months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 23.1 percent, said the Hanoi Trade Department.

Key export products such as garments and electronics achieved significant growth over the same period last year. Textile and garment exports reached nearly US$258.6 million, up 17.5 percent, while electronic goods generated US$102 million, an increase of 12.2 percent.

With strong exports in the past five months, Hanoi is expected to meet its export target of US$3.3 billion set for 2006 and an overall export growth of 18-19 percent.

The municipal Trade Department said the city has targeted export revenue of US$6.6 billion by 2010 with an annual growth rate of 18-20 percent. It has identified six key trade promotion programmes through 2010, including supporting export enterprises in applying information technology, building trademarks, and exploring markets.

In addition, the department has also required relevant agencies to adjust the capital's export strategy and increase the competitiveness of the city's key export products.

Currently, Hanoi has about 1,000 enterprises taking part in export activities and its key export goods include agricultural products, clothing, footwear and electronics.

According to General Statistic Office forecasts, Vietnam is expected to earn US$37.4 billion from exports this year.
