Vietnam and the United Kingdom (UK) have agreed to the outline of an action plan for bilateral cooperation with a focus on education quality insurance, distribution of research funding, and partnership between educational institutions in the two countries.

This agreement was reached at a meeting between Vietnamese Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan and visiting UK Education Minister Bill Rammell in Hanoi on February 7.

Rammell is the first UK Education Minister to visit Vietnam. The visit is aimed at renewing the UK’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s ambitions for a robust and accessible educational system.

While meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem, UK Education Minister Rammell expressed hope that the number of Vietnamese students studying in the UK will further increase from the current level of 4,000 for the common benefit of both countries.

The Deputy PM said education development is a prerequisite measure for Vietnam to meet its target of escaping poverty by 2010 and becoming an industrialised nation by 2020.

He affirmed that the UK will continue to assist Vietnam in promoting education, treating gas emission treatment, and dealing with problems caused by global weather changes.

As part of his visit to Vietnam, Rammell took part in an event held by the Radio Voice of Vietnam (VOV) and the BBC Vietnamese Programme on February 7. The programme started in 1995 but was suspended later due to financial and content problems. It was resumed on January 1.
