Suspected Taliban militants have attacked two police checkposts along a highway in southern Afghanistan, sparking fighting that has left 14 fighters dead, police said on Sunday, according to the Associated Press.

The attacks follow deadly fighting in nearby Kandahar province, that officials say left 47 dead.

About 30 Taliban attacked the police posts late on Saturday in Qalat district, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) northeast of Kandahar, Zabul police chief Ghulam Nabi Malakhail said, AP reports.

Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, a purported Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack, saying at least seven police were killed and the Taliban burned one of the police posts.

It was not immediately possible to verify his claim, nor the death toll provided by police.

There has been a surge in attacks on Afghan and foreign forces since the Taliban announced last month they had launched a spring offensive.
