International Super Grandmaster Le Quang Liem will play Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia in the first round of the World Chess Cup on August 28 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
His teammate Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son will meet with Li Chao of China at the same event. The Vietnamese representatives have checkmated their two rivals several times in the past and hope to beat them again and enter the second round, a feat that has never been achieved before.
Liem, the Aeroflot tournament champion and runner-up at the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meet, is seeded No. 20, while Son, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Chess Championship 2011, is No. 73, among 128 masters.
The two will leave for Khanty-Mansiysk on August 25 and hope to share the US$1.6 million cash prize.
