30 drug traffickers sentenced to death

(VOV) - A first instance court in the northern border province of Quang Ninh on January 20 handed down death sentences on 30 defendants involved in four transnational drug trafficking rings.

The provincial People’s Court also sentenced 13 defendants to life imprisonment and imposed sentences of up to 20 years on 46 other defendants.

The defendants were charged with trafficking and smuggling more than 5,000 cakes of heroin and thousands of drug tablets from Laos to Vietnam and China.

They were also prosecuted for falsifying material, illegally stockpiling weapons, and giving bribe.

This is the biggest ever transnational drug trafficking case uncovered in Vietnam.
