Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Lao counterpart Bouasone Bouphavanh affirmed their determination to build mechanisms and policies to effectively explore the potential and strength of each country while boosting cooperation in economics, culture and science and technology.

The Vietnamese delegation led by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on December 19 began an official visit to Laos at the invitation of his Lao counterpart Bouasone Bouphavanh.

Mr Dung and his entourage were welcomed at the National Assembly House’s Square in Vientiane by Lao Prime Minster Bouasone Bouphavanh. After laying wreaths at the unknown fallen combatants’ monument, Mr Dung had talks with his Lao counterpart Bouasone Bouphavanh in an atmosphere of openness, friendship and mutual understanding.

The two Government leaders expressed their delight at the time-honoured relations of friendship, cooperation and special solidarity between the two countries which have been constantly consolidated and finely developed in all fields particularly in economics, trade and investment in recent times.

Vietnam now has many investment projects totally valued at nearly US$500 million in Laos, focusing on electricity, forestry, mine ores, transportation and plantation of industrial crops.

The two PMs affirmed their determination to build mechanisms and policies to effectively explore the potential and strength of each country while boosting cooperation in economics, culture and science and technology. They said they will instruct sectors, ministries and localities to organise the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam-Laos Friendship Treaty in 2007 and will also ask them to conduct regular exchange visits to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.

PM Nguyen Tan Dung said he is happy to attend the inauguration of Friendship Bridge No 2 over the Mekong River that links the Lao province of Savanakhet and the Thai province of Muk Dahan. Mr Dung appreciated the concerted efforts by Laos and Thailand as well as effective assistance from the Japanese Government in building the second bridge spanning the Mekong River which, he said, will greatly contribute to accelerating projects to connect the East-West corridor transport network.

During their talks, the two Prime Ministers stressed the need to enhance close and effective cooperation in implementing projects of the West-East Corridor and the Greater Mekong Sub-region in the context of current regional and international developments. They also confirmed their determination to cooperate with Cambodia to successfully build the Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia development triangle.

In the afternoon, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung paid a courtesy visit to General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party and State President Chumaly Saynhason and met with National Assembly Chairman Thongsing Thammavong.

At these meetings, PM Dung highly appreciated Laos’ great achievements during the renovation process and expressed his belief that Laos will successfully implement the resolution of the 8th congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party.

PM Dung expressed his hope that Lao leaders will further support and create favourable conditions for development of comprehensive cooperation, particularly in spearhead industries, to boost economic developments in Vietnam and Laos.

Also in the afternoon, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung witnessed the signing of a draft agreement on energy cooperation between the two governments, a deal between the Vietnamese Ministry of Trade and the Lao Ministry of Industry and Commerce on 50 commodities enjoying tax preferential, and a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in hydro-electricity.

Late in the afternoon, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received representatives of the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Association and talked with staff of the Vietnamese embassy in Vientiane.

In the evening, Prime Minister Bouasone Bouphavanh held a banquet in honour of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the Vietnamese delegation.
