The 2009 National Vovinam Championships opened at the Military Zone No.7’s Sport Complex Centre in Ho Chi Minh City on September 26, drawing the participation of 23 teams from all over the country.
Athletes competed in two main events: performance and fighting, men compete in 11 weight categories and women in nine. Sixteen sets of medals will be awarded to the winners at the event sponsored by Thai Binh Paper Joint Stock Company.
On the first day of competition, the Ho Chi Minh City team gained a gold medal in the fighting event with a score of 166. The silver medal went to the army team which scored 160, and the Binh Duong team won the bronze medal with a score of 155.
The army team is temporarily leading the tournament with 2 gold medals, followed by HCM City, Vinh Long, An Giang and Tien Giang with one gold medal each.
