Vietnamese, French artists gear up for Mendelssohn Violin Concerto

Vietnamese violinist Pham Vinh, French conductor Laurent Boer and artists from The Ensemble Polyphonique de Choisy-le-Roi and Que Huong vocal ensemble from France will join hands for Mendelssohn Violin Concerto on October 29 night.

The show is started with “Linh Giac” by Vietnamese composer Nguyen Thien Dao, a monument of Vietnamese classical music.

He is one of a few successful Vietnamese composers in Europe with a new discovery of contemporary music combining both European and Asian colors.

He has won prestigious awards from France, including “André Caplet,” “Gian Carlo Menoti” and a medal “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” from the French Government in 1984.

He was honored to be enrolled in two dictionaries of France’s biggest celebrities, including Le Petit Larousse (1982) and Le Petit Robert (1995). “Linh Giac” will be performed by soprano Pham Khanh Ngoc and the symphony orchestra.

Recently, Ngoc came second at SLO-ASEAN Vocal Competition in Singapore in earlier October.

Violinist Pham Vinh will have a trip back home from France to perform one of the most challenging works for any violinists - the Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor together with HBSO Symphony Orchestra.

Vinh earned his success in Europe at an early age, since he was 15 years old, and became the youngest winner of international competitions such as “Tibor Varga International Violin Competition” in Switzerland and “G.B.Viotti International Chamber Music Competition-Duo Violin/Piano” in Italy.

With charming and sophisticated performance style, Vinh has been invited to perform as a soloist and as a concertmaster with many leading symphony orchestras in Europe. He once had a performing tour around Europe with violinist Ivry Gitlis.

Mendelssohn’s Violin Concert is considered as one of the greatest pieces, which has the most influences and has been most performed at all times.

All talented violinists in the world have chosen this work to showcase their skills.

Audiences are promised to enjoy beautiful melody lines and familiar musical themes of a vocal work from J.S.Bach “Magnificat,” a musical setting of the biblical canticle of the same name written for four voices with a choir and a symphony orchestra.

The work will be performed by four soloists, Pham Duyen Huyen, Nguyen Vu Uyen Di, Pham Trang, and Dao Mac with HBSO Symphony Orchestra, Choir of Ensemble Poliphonique de Choisy le Roi and Que Huong vocal ensemble which is popular to the Vietnamese community in France.

The concert will be under the baton of Laurent Boer, an associate professor in music education and choral singing who was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques, a national order of France for distinguished academics and figures in the world of culture and education. Originally a décor, he is a choirmaster recognized by the Ministry of Culture of France.

After studying vocal music, piano and composition, he went on to study choral conducting with Philippe Caillard, Stephane Caillat and Eric Ericsson.

He also studied conducting with Jean-Jacques Werner, Jean-François Paillard and Nicolas Brochot.

Laurent’s educational activities include the supervision of a number of choral and opera singing courses and the artistic coordination of a major performance to commemorate the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

He was the author of various cultural and educational projects in the Comenius European Programs in Austria, Finland, Turkey, Spain and Italy.

Tickets are priced from VND200,000 per person. For further information, call 08 3823 7419 or 0903 604 539. The program will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday at the HCMC Opera House at 7 Lam Son Square, District 1, HCMC.
