Vietnam welcomes UNSC’s resolution on Gaza ceasefire
VOV.VN - Vietnam welcomes a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution that demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, said Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam.
Fourteen UNSC members voted in favour of Resolution 2728 that calls for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip on March 25, while the United States abstained from the vote.
Vietnam calls on concerned parties to immediately implement the resolution, towards a long-term and sustainable ceasefire in the region, promoting humanitarian aid and protecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, Hang said in a statement released on March 27.
According to the spokesperson, Vietnam supports all of the international community’s efforts in urging the parties to exercise restraint, hold dialogues and handle disagreements via peaceful means and based on respect for international law and related resolutions of the UNSC so as to achieve a fair, satisfactory and lasting solution to the peace process in the Middle East.
The conflict in the Gaza Strip broke out on October 7, 2023, when the armed group Hamas attacked Israeli territory, killing about 1,160 people and taking 250 people as hostages.
The two sides late last year reached a one-week ceasefire agreement and returned some hostages. Israel believes that 130 hostages are still in the Gaza Strip, of whom 33 are dead.
Gaza Strip health authorities said Israel’s military campaign in the strip has left 32,490 people dead.
Since the outbreak of hostilities, Vietnam has repeatedly condemned violent attacks against civilians and called on all concerned parties to immediately cease fire in the Gaza Strip.
