PM meets Myanmar, Malaysian leaders on the sidelines of 30th ASEAN Summit

VOV.VN - On April 28 Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc met with Aung San Suu Kyi, Head of the Myanmar delegation to the ongoing 30th ASEAN Summit in the Philippines.

PM Phuc praised the achievements in socio-economic development the Myanmar government has scored over the past years under the leadership of Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD).

The two sides expressed satisfaction with the flourishing friendship and cooperation between the two countries based on the foundation built by President Ho Chi Minh and great leader Aung San.

For her part, Aung San Suu Kyi applauded Vietnam's achievements in its national construction and development as a source of inspiration for her nation to continue to overcome difficulties and challenges.

The Vietnamese government leader and Aung San Suu Kyi agreed to well implement what was achieved during the Vietnam visit by the President of Myanmar in October 2016 and the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces in March 2017.

They agreed to accelerate negotiations on the signing of cooperation agreements in areas of huge potential such as trade, investment, transport, finance, justice, education, telecommunications and especially agriculture and defence.

The Myanmar side pledged to continue creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses’ investment operations in Myanmar.

Both sides concurred to strengthen coordination aiming to promote ASEAN's central role and to regard ASEAN solidarity and unity as a prerequisite for building a strong ASEAN Community.

They also underscored the need to settle disputes through peaceful measures on the basis of respect for international law towards reaching a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The same day, Prime Minister Nguy​en Xu​an Ph​uc met with his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The two leaders expressed their delight at the development of the strategic partnership between the two countries and agreed to step up comprehensive cooperation.

They also pledged to elevate bilateral trade to US$20 billion in 2020 from the current US$11 billion.

Najib Razak said his nation will bolster cooperation in halal food production and consider hiring more Vietnamese workers in areas where there is demand for such labour.

He also pledged that legal proceedings and trial of Vietnamese citizen Doan Thi Huong will be conducted in a fair and legal manner and her legitimate rights will be ensured.

The two leaders consented to enhance joint work between the two armies in combating pirates to ensure navigation safety in the region.

They were unanimous in maintaining consultation and close collaboration on building a united ASEAN and promoting the central role of ASEAN in tackling regional strategic issues, especially the East Sea issue.

Both sides stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security and safety of maritime navigation and aviation, and agreed that disputes should be solved through peaceful means, on the basis of respect for international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and other diplomatic and legal processes. 

They said they will also work closely towards a legally binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).
