PM Phuc hopes for continued promotion of Vietnam-Portugal relations

VOV.VN - Vietnam and Portugal should continue reinforcing their traditional relationship that began 500 years ago since the first Portuguese came to Vietnam, PM Nguuyen Xuan Phuc said while receiving Secretary of State of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Portugal Teresa Ribeiro in Hanoi on November 23.

The Vietnamese government leader called on Portugal to urge the European Union to sign and ratify the EU – Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to facilitate economic-trade links between the two countries.

Vietnam – Portugal trade exchange hit US$350 million in 2016 but the figure is still below the two countries’ full potential, Phuc noted.

He said he hopes the two sides will exchange their business delegations to effectively explore investment cooperation opportunities of each side.

In observance of the 40th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between the two countries and 500 years of first Portuguese arrival in Vietnam, both sides have signed a number of agreements on economic and trade ties.

A score of measures were discussed to bolster economic cooperation, Teresa Ribeiro said while noting Portuguese businesses' interest in Vietnam, especially in tourism and hotel building, renewable energy, and water management.

She said she hopes that the EVFTA will be signed next year, opening up a new chapter in Vietnam – Portugal relations.

PM Phuc also wished her great success in her capacity, thus contributing to the development of the two countries' relations.
