Vietnam sticks importance to fostering ties with Canada

VOV.VN - Vietnam always attaches great importance to and wants to further enhance relations with Canada for the benefit of each country, for peace, stability, cooperation and development in two regions and in the world, said President Tran Dai Quang at a reception on June 5 in Hanoi for the visiting Canadian Defence Minister, Harjit Singh Sajjan.

At the reception, President Tran Dai Quang highlighted the significance of the guest’s visit taking place when both nations are carrying out their leaders’ commitment to promote the comprehensive partnership, which was set up in 2017 towards the 45th anniversary of the Vietnam-Canada diplomatic relations  1973-2018) and opening a new chapter in bilateral defense relations.

Vietnam and Canada have maintained the good friendly relations, and have worked together to promote common goals, development cooperation, economic growth, and trade exchange. Currently, Vietnam is Canada’s largest trading partner in ASEAN while Canada is also a major investor and always in the group of leading development aid donors for Vietnam.

The Vietnamese State leader highly appreciated the outcomes of talks between the two Defence Ministers in which,  the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on  the Military Training and Cooperation Programme of Canada (MTCP), and affirmed the State and Government of Vietnam will create conditions for the two sides to further cooperative relations between the two Defence Ministries.

President Quang suggested the two ministries boost closer coordination to effectively realize contents as agreed aiming to develop defence ties into a pillar of their bilateral ties.

On this occasion, President Tran Dai Quang extended his regards to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and other Canadian leaders.

The Canadian Defence Minister informed his host on outcomes of the talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Ngo Xuan Lich, during which both sides consented to step up partnership in areas of mutual interest, including defence industry, personnel training, UN peacekeeping missions, marine security and military medicine.

The ministers also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on the Military Training and Cooperation Programme of Canada, allowing Vietnamese officers to take part in diverse training courses in Canada.

Sajjan praised the Vietnamese community in Canada, saying some 14,000 Vietnamese students who are studying in Canada would play a significant part in reinforcing and developing the two countries’ relations.

He stressed that as an Asian-Pacific nation which always wishes for regional stability, Canada supports the rule of law and observance of international law in the settlement of territorial disputes, particularly in the East Sea.
