Vietnamese, Thai navies boost anti-piracy coordination
The navies of Vietnam and Thailand have agreed to further joint anti-piracy cooperation and marine environmental protection, along with increasing delegation exchanges, exercises in joint patrols, and information sharing in 2014.
Both sides are unanimous in working with relevant agencies to step up sea law dissemination for fishermen and settle violations and illegal fishing cases in a humane manner, thus safeguarding stability, security and order in the bordering waters.
These agreements were reached at the 16th annual meeting of the Vietnamese-Thai Working Group on the Establishment of Order at Sea in the northern port province of Haiphong.
The meeting on August 6 and 7 was co-chaired by Rear Admiral Nguyen Van Kiem, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Vietnam People’s Navy, and Rear Admiral Pornchai Pinthong, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Navy’s Zone 2.
The two sides reviewed their activities from August 2012 to July 2013 and the implementation of regulations for joint patrols.
Cooperation between the navies has been incessantly enhanced, contributing importantly to promoting the two countries’ friendship and armies as well as maintaining order in their bordering waters, the officers said.
Notably, in the reviewed period, two joint patrols, search and rescue exercises and basic naval trainings were organised successfully.
