A press briefing was held in Hanoi on June 9 by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation to introduce a programme called “World Blood Donor Day” (June 14).

With the theme "More blood. More life”, World Blood Donor Day 2011 aims to encourage more people from all over the world to become life-savers by volunteering to donate blood regularly. A healthy person’s blood donation each time can save at least three patients.

Honouring blood donors is a token of respect from the community and society for blood donors and an appeal to all people to take part in blood donation campaigns for the heath of themselves and patients.

Last year, Vietnam received more than 675,000 blood units, up 12.3 percent over 2009. The number of voluntary blood donors reached 84.2 percent and that of regular blood donors rose to 39.6 percent. However, the total volume of blood can meet only 40 percent of the real demand in Vietnam.
