HCM City’s Buddhist Academy opens

The Vietnam Buddhist Academy in Ho Chi Minh City was inaugurated in Le Minh Xuan commune, Binh Chanh district on May 8.

The new facility would open a new chapter for the education of Buddhist monks and nuns nationwide, said Most Venerable Thich Toan Giac, Vice President of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (BSV)’s Executive Council. 

The academy includes an administration building, a classroom building, a sanctum, monasteries for monks and nuns and a building for catering, the vice president said, adding that it was constructed at a total cost of VND180 billion (US$8.08 million). 

Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, head of the academy, said he believed that with the new facility, the academy would soon become a Buddhist university that offers courses in social science and humanities, and science. 

The BSV’s Executive Council plans to expand the facility with a 2,000-sqm conference hall, a 1,800-sqm sanctum able to accommodate 2,500 people, a library, a 150-room guesthouse and additional classrooms. The plan is expected to cost VND1 trillion (US$44.9 million)
