Construction of a monument in memory of the 10 young female volunteers who sacrificed their lives at the Dong Loc crossroads during the American war in Vietnam began at the site in the central province of Ha Tinh on July 23.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan spoke about the Government and his ministry’s efforts to have the monument built on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of War Invalids and Fallen Combatants’ Day (July 27).

He said that a great number of teachers and local benefactors had contributed VND3 billion to help finance construction of the monument.

Meanwhile, politburo member Ho Duc Viet highlighted the great historical value of the Dong Loc crossroads.

“The construction of this monument underlines our gratitude towards our elders who laid down their lives to protect the nation in its hour of need,” Mr Viet said.

Construction of the VND10 billion stone monument, which depicts the 10 young female volunteers who were endeavouring to keep the road open, is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
