Northern localities experience torrential rain caused by typhoon Nida

VOV.VN - Total rainfall has increased to even above 250 mm in some areas, according to the National Centre for Hydro – Meteorological Forecasting.

Tropical typhoon Nida, the second of its kind this year, is bringing downpours in northern Vietnam.

Heavy rain together with whirlwinds claimed two lives, injured three other people in northern Lao Cai province and damaged about 1,000 houses in Yen Bai province.

Gale along with rain could rage through the southern part of the East Sea, including Vietnam’s Truong Sa (Spratly) Archipelago and coastal areas from central Binh Thuan to Ca Mau provinces.

The centre warned of possible flash floods and landslides in northern mountainous areas August 3-5, adding that heavy rain is likely to hit the Central Highlands and southern region.

The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control under the National Committee for Search and Rescue have directed northern mountainous localities to keep a close watch on weather developments and to embrace themselves for emergency.

Harest hit Lao Cai and Yen Bai provinces were asked to evaluate losses and support local people in dealing with the consequences.
