Vietnam memorial in Cambodia undergoes restoration

VOV.VN - A monument commemorating Vietnamese soldiers installed in Battambang City who were classified as missing in action from the past war helping Cambodia escape from the Pol Pot genocide is being restored to its original finish.

Speaking at the ground-breaking ceremony for the project on May 12, Governor Chan Saphol of the Battambang Province, said the memorial keeps alive memories of one of the greatest challenges to Cambodia’s independence.

We are two nations that love our heroes and hate wars, said the Governor. The Cambodian people shall never forget the ultimate sacrifice and support of Vietnamese soldiers and volunteers during our time of need.

The project is part of an effort begun in 2013 to refurbish all friendship monuments in Cambodia between the two nations that was approved by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan.

The monument spans an area of some 10,000 square metres and is being renovated at an estimated budget cost of US$500,000 –  all of which is being funded by the Ministry of Defence of Vietnam.
