Youth run marks Earth Day

(VOV) - More than 300 students from universities and colleges in Hanoi took part in a run at Thong Nhat (Reunification) Park on April 21 to mark the occasion of Earth Day.

The event aimed to call upon the public and businesses to stop polluting the country’s rivers, lakes and other water sources.

A series of other activities were scheduled for the day such as a run around Bay Mau Lake, cleaning and collecting rubbish in localities, disseminating posters about environmental protection, exchanging trash for trees and other products, and a Flashmob dance.

Writing messages and drawing pictures about protecting the environment also attracted a large number of both children and adults.

Hoang Duong Tung, Deputy Head of the General Department of the Environment, said environmental pollution not only damages nature, it also costs a lot of money to deal with the damage.

Everyone should join hands to keep Hanoi’s lakes clean and protect the trees that are the “lungs” of the capital, he said Earth Day is held every year on April 22 to raise public awareness of global environmental protection. It was initiated in the US in 1970 and launched globally by the United Nations in 2009, attracting millions of people around the world to help protect the environment.
