Vietnam bags first gold in sepak takraw

Trio Nguyen Thai Linh, Tran Hong Nhung and Do Thi Nguyen helped Vietnam beat Myanmar in the Women’s Trio final of the Sepak Takraw event for a gold medal at the 5th Asian Beach Games on September 27.

The trio overpowered Myanmar in the first set with an easy 21-9 win before taking the second set, 25-21, for the gold medal.

“It’s was a great win for us when we concentrated on the final today. We had beaten them in a group match before, but they were still tough rivals in the final,” the team captain, Do Thi Nguyen, said after the final.

“We reserve the win for all the Vietnamese fans on the beach at Danang who have been supporting us like crazy all the way.”

The team coach Hoang Huu Nghia said the team’s players prepared well for the game against Myanmar.

“We deserved to win today. Although we had won games against Myanmar in the group match, the team played with everything they had to win the game,” Nghia said.

It’s also the first gold medal for Vietnam’s Sepak Takraw team at the ABG5.

In the men’s Trio final later, Myanmar beat Laos 2-0 (25-23, 21-18) to win the gold medal.

Laos had a seesaw first set with Myanmar and the two sides had to decide it in tiebreak. The Lao players could not keep up their momentum in the last minutes of the first set, losing 25-23. Myanmar regrouped in the second set to win 21-18 for gold medal.

The Sepak Takraw event will continue with the men’s and women’s Regu Preliminary in the group competition at My Khe beach.

Vietnam also bagged two gold medals in the beach athletics on September 27.

Bui Thi Thu Thao took a 6.32m jump to win gold and beat her teammate Nguyen Thi Truc Mai, who came in second with a 6.11m jump. Sunang Marestella from the Philippines bagged the bronze medal with a 6.1m jump.

In the men’s Shot Put final, Samari Ali of Iran completed an 18.29m throw for the gold medal, beating Chinese Guo Yanxiang, in second place with result of 17.78m. Thailand’s Juntima Promrob took the bronze medal with a 17.10m throw.

In the women’s 60m final race, Vietnamese Le Thi Tu Trinh finished first in 7.6 seconds to win gold, shaving three hundredths of a second off the time of Pakdee Khanrutai of Thailand (7.73sec). Le Thi Mong Tuyen of Vietnam finished third with a time of 7.74sec for bronze medal.

In the men’s 60m final, Al Harthi Barakat Mubarak Mabrook of Oman clocked in 6.44sec for gold medal, beating off Iran’s Ghasemi Reza (6.55sec), and Pan Xinyue of China (6.77sec).

Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Huong beat her teammate Nguyen Ngoc Diem Phuong in the women’s under-63kg class of Kurash on September 27, taking gold and silver medals for Vietnam.

Nguyen Thị Lan also bagged gold when she beat Tokas Amisha of India in the women’s under-70kg final.

Ali Akbari Elyas of Iran took home a gold medal with a win over Shamsidinov Mukhammadali from Uzbekistan in the men’s under-81kg.

Setdarov Yhlas from Turkmenistan beat his teammate Aliyev Nabi in the men’s under-90kg for gold medal.

In the Show System Men Women (Mixed) final of the Ju-Jitsu event, Thailand’s Yimprai Ratcharat and Chansri Arreewan edged Vietnamese Trần Thanh Lam and Nguyen Phuong Uyen out with a score 49-48.5 for gold medal.

In the Newaza Women’s Open Weight, Alquabaj Luma Hatem Sharif of Jordan beat Tog-Ochir Battsetseg from Mongolia with 99-0 for gold.

Newaza Men’s Open weight, Alhammadi Yahya of United of Arabs United (UEA) defeated his country’s fellowman Alketbi Faisal with score 14-0, bagging gold medal.
