Myanmar to hold by-election in early 2017

Myanmar will hold a by-election early next year to fill the vacant seats in the parliament, U Aung Myint, member of the Election Commission, has said.

The parliamentary seats were left by those who became government leaders or officials in the 2015 general election, U Aung Myint told the press after a meeting of the House of Nationalities (Upper House) in Nay Pyi Taw on August 22.

The number of vacant seats will be confirmed when time approaches, he said, without giving a specific date.

Myanmar held a general election to elect parliament representatives in November 2015, in which the National League for Democracy (NLD) won the absolute majority of seats in the two houses.
