Thailand: Red Shirts opens centre to monitor referendum

Thailand’s United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, or the Red Shirts, on June 5 opened a centre to monitor the referendum on the new draft constitution at the fifth floor of the Imperial Lat Phrao department store in Bangkok.

The centre is intended to help the Election Commission detect any fraud on the voting day and beyond.

Prior to the press conference on the opening of the centre made by its chairman Jatuporn Promphan, police and military officers met Jatuporn and asked him not to hold the conference. However, he still went ahead to hold his conference.

According to the Constitution Drafting Committee, the 105-page draft constitution contains 279 articles, and is expected to be a solution to the one-decade political crisis in the country.

The referendum will be held on August 7. If the draft constitution is approved in this referendum, a general election will be held in July 2017, as committed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha.
