Hosts Vietnam were held to a 1-1 draw by Thailand in their first match of the Southeast Asian Football Federation (AFF) U19 Championship in HCM City on July 24.

Khamrim put Thailand into the lead in the 59th minute after a corner kick, the ball hit defender Van Nam’s leg and deflected into the net.

Coach Quang Ha’s 11 men carved out lots of scoring chances, and their efforts were rewarded with substitute Van Thanh’s header in the 77th minute.

The surprising draw created enormous difficulty for Vietnam as they will play tough rivals Australia and the Republic of Korea (RoK) in the following matches.

In the opening game of the same day, Australia stunned the RoK with a 27th minute goal.

The tournament will last until July 30.

Both Vietnam and Thailand have qualified for the final round of the Asian U19 Football Championship in China this October.
