The World Health Organisation (WHO) will help Vietnam realise its initiative to make the upcoming 3rd Asian Indoor Games (AIG III) a smoke-free event.
An agreement to this effect was signed in Hanoi on October 23 between Deputy General of the General Department of Physical Training and Sports, Vuong Bich Thang, and WHO Chief Representative in Vietnam, Jean-Marc Olive.

Pursuant to the accord, smoking, funding from or any advertising or promotions for tobacco companies and their products will be prohibited at all venues of the sporting event.

The organisers are responsible for promulgating and enforcing regulations, training volunteers, and implementing communications activities to enhance the awareness of the regulations regarding no-smoking at the AIG III.

WHO will provide assistance, both technically and financially, to support event organisers in deploying these activities.

AIG III is scheduled to take place in Vietnam from October 30 to November 8 with the participation of over 20,000 athletes, coaches and representatives from 45 Asian countries and territories.
