Vietnamese ship runs aground off Maldives, crew rescued

(VOV) -Rescue workers of Maldives have brought ashore 20 Vietnamese sailors and stevedores aboard a Haiphong-based cargo ship that went aground in the waters 1 mile off the Maldives Islands.

Vietnam’s coastal radio station on June 9 received an SOS signal from Viet Long vessel of Haiphong port city which was travelling 1 mile off the Maldives.

According to the Digital Selective Calling (DSC) emergency call, the vessel was going to sink as seawater was flooding the cargo hold.

On receiving the call, the coastal radio station informed local and regional search and rescue forces of the incident.

It later learned that the Maldives’s rescue vessel on June 10 approached the Vietnamese ship and brought the crew ashore safely.
