More than 60 US trade officials and economists working in 11 economies in Asia, and members of the business community and education organisations attended a conference of ASEAN trade councillors in Da Nang City on September 19.

The conference, which was organised by the US Department of Commerce,  aims to put forth new methods so that the US government and private economic sector can cooperate in promoting close relationship between the US and ASEAN though trade and investment.

Addressing the opening ceremony, US Consul General, Kenneth Fairfax affirmed that Vietnam is a fast growing economy and it is integrating well into the global economy. The American Chambers of Commerce in HCM City and Hanoi have worked hard to introduce products and services of US industry into Vietnam.

Since the Vietnam-US bilateral trade agreement took effect in 2001, the volume of US exports to Vietnam has doubled. Their trade relations have been rapidly expanded over the past decade with two-way trade turnover increasing from US$1.2 billion in 2001 to nearly US$10 billion in 2006. The trade boom is attributed to Vietnam’s strong economic growth rate and the development of many US companies which provide equipment, materials, technology, and management skills in Vietnam.

The conference will end on September 22.
