A conference was held in Hanoi on September 6 to review tens years of implementation of the Government’s directive against the production and smuggling of fake goods in northern provinces.

The conference was attended by representatives from the Government Office, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Public Security.

In recent years, the fight against fake and substandard goods helped make trade activities more reliable and create favourable conditions for businesses to boost production and development.

According to statistics, in the last ten years, market management parties dealt with more than 100,000 cases related to production of fake goods and violation of intellectual property rights with a total fine payment of VND124 billion. Customs officers also handled almost 200 cases of export and import of fake goods and goods violating intellectual property rights. Economic police dealt with more than 460 cases and prosecuted more than 550 law breakers in counterfeit goods dealing.

Counterfeit and substandard goods are still prevalent in rural and remote areas. However, thanks to enhanced inspection and monitoring as well as close coordination between ministries, sectors and inspection teams, the production of such goods is under control.

Nguyen Hung Dung, head of the Market Management Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade underlined the need to intensify communication and help people recognise fake and substandard goods as well as using real and high-quality products and promoting international cooperation to prevent cross-border smuggling.
