Belgium shares experience in sustainable urban development

Belgian experts shared experience in sustainable urban development during a workshop in Hanoi on December 8.

The event was held by the Vietnam Urban Forum, Brussels Invest & Export, and Flanders Investment & Trade.

Belgian Ambassador to Vietnam Jehanne Rocas said the workshop introduced outstanding studies on urban development, environmental protection, and renewable energy.

She added that Belgium has led the world in environmental technologies over the past 50 years.

Belgium has supported the Vietnam Urban Forum (VUF) since its establishment in 2003, she said, noting that the European country invests in the VUF’s projects in the central provinces of Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan and Ha Tinh.

It also assisted waterway transport projects in Ho Chi Minh City and coordinated with Vietnamese universities to develop urbanisation, she added.

Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Hung pointed out challenges in the field.

He said Hanoi is aiming to build a green, modern, dynamic and highly-competitive city in the country and beyond through 2030 with a vision towards 2050.

The capital is focusing on improving urban planning and management capacity and is devising regulations to attract domestic and foreign organisations and experts to the field, he revealed.

Hanoi will take measures to modernise its infrastructure and ensure harmony between the preservation of historical and cultural heritage sites and economic development.

The city will pay heed to the knowledge-based economy, environmental protection and defence and security, he noted.

During the workshop, participants discussed measures to develop urban areas and promote green growth in Vietnam such as building smart cities, improving lighting systems, water management, and coping with urban environmental pollution.
