The Ho Chi Minh City People's Supreme Court has upheld the three-year prison sentence handed down to British ex-rock star Gary Glitter on March 3 by a court in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province for molesting two underage Vietnamese girls.

The court of appeal on June 15 also upheld the decision made at the March 3 hearing to confiscate the hardware of Glitter’s laptop. It ruled that the 62-year-old man, whose real name of Paul Gadd, will be expelled from Vietnam after he serves his term.

Glitter was also ordered to pay compensation of US$315 to each victim, in addition to the US$2,000 per each he has paid after the first court hearing.

The former British glam rocker was found guilty by the Ba Ria-Vung Tau People’s Court for committing obscene acts with girls aged 11 and 12 at his rented villa in the coastal city of Vung Tau.

Chief judge Truong Vinh Thuy said Glitter did not give a sincere statement before the court, adding that the court’s decision was based on evidence as well as documents and testimony of the Vietnamese girls.
