Malaysian artist evokes beauty of life in HCM City

Life and people are the themes of works by painter Shyevin S’ ng that are now on display at the Fine Arts Museum in Ho Chi Minh City.

The exhibition, A Painter’s Journey, contains 19 oil paintings, including the Sa Pa Rice Paddy Field which reveals the artist’s love for the green fields of Sa Pa, a mountainous district in Lao Cai province.

Other works, including Blossom 5, Canoes, Golden Chain 4, and Hakodate, capture the beauty of the sky and sea, landscape, towns, and flowers in Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan.

S’ ng, who grew up in a small fishing town in Malaysia, said, “In art, I can imagine my own world.”

“I’m often inspired by the natural landscape I visit. My paintings are a reflection of my own life ideas and experiences,” the self-taught artist said.

One of the exhibition’s highlights is Sa Pa Paddy Field 2, which depicts a huge and beautiful terraced paddy field.

“When traveling through Sa Pa, I met a young girl who took me to a beautiful river where I would swim and play with local children,” she said. “It was a unique experience to see first hand the Sa Pa community and how they live together.”

In Golden Chain 4, the artist portrays the tree Golden Chain in her hometown, Kampung, that grows near her house.

“I’ve never forgotten this tree. I always pass it with a smile on my face,” she recalled.

S’ ng’s works have been exhibited in galleries and collected by art collectors in the US, Canada, France, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, South Africa and Asia.

Her latest group exhibition titled Emergence was shown at the Artmeis Art Gallery in Kuala Lumpur this year.

The show runs through November 15 and can be seen at the museum at 97A Pho Duc Chinh Street in HCM City’s District 1.
