Nearly one million followers of the Hoa Hao Buddhist Sect in the Mekong delta provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Tien Giang and Ho Chi Minh City flocked to An Giang province on June 13 to celebrate the Sect's 67th founding anniversary.

Representatives from the Government Committee for Religious Affairs and An Giang provincial officials attended the ceremony held at An Hoa Tu pagoda in Phu My town of Phu Tan district.

With more than two million followers practising their religion in 259 worship places, the Sect has developed in Mekong Delta provinces, Ho Chi Minh City, and the central provinces of Khanh Hoa and Phu Yen. The Sect’s Executive Board holds regular basic religious courses in many localities. In the first six months of this year, it gave 356 sermons to help followers live in line with the Sect's guidelines.

Hoa Hao followers have also actively participated in charity activities, including building compassionate houses, repairing roads and bridges, and upgrading rural roads. It has so far raised a total of almost VND23 billion for charity activities.

This year, similar ceremonies were held in 242 localities in 13 provinces and cities in Vietnam, an increase of 52 localities over the last year.
