A seminar titled “Doha round and its impact on Vietnam” was held in Nha Trang City, Khanh Hoa province on September 24.

The event, which was organized by the Multilateral and Trade Policy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, attracted more than 30 businessmen from state management enterprises and research institutes in the central and central highland regions.

At the seminar, Professor Claudio Dordi - team leader of the EU-Vietnam Multilateral Trade Assistance III project, said that if the Doha round concludes early, it will offer many opportunities for Vietnam to expand its market to the US and EU, narrow the gap in tariffs, and perfect regulations on anti-dumping issues and agricultural subsidies.

Luong Hoang Thai, Deputy Director of the Multilateral and Trade Policy Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said that to seize opportunities, Vietnamese businesses should be fully aware of the Doha round, build proper trade polices and adjust business plans to make use of WTO members’ commitments to open new markets.

The Doha round kicked off in 2001 at the WTO Ministerial Conference held in Doha, Qatar. It has mainly focused on agriculture, the expansion of commodity and service markets, and issues relating to intellectual property rights and trade facilitation. The round was expected to end in 2005 but has been suspended.
