197 people in northern Nam Dinh province were hospitalised with symptoms of acute diarrhoea from June 17 to July 19, said the provincial Health Department. Of them, 80 tested positive for the Vibrio cholerae virus.

Nghia Hung district topped the list of infected localities with 50 positive cases out of 154 patients while Nam Dinh City discovered 13 with seven positive ones.

The outbreak of the disease was attributed to the province’s serious polluted environment and local people’s unhygienic food habits.

To deal with the situation, the provincial authorities have taken urgent measures such as marking out and sanitising the infected areas, isolating and treating patients, and calling on local people to be more proactive in preventing the disease.

All food shops in Nam Dinh will be subject to inspection by the health authority, they said.
