Da Nang seeks investment to boost solid waste treatment

Da Nang is seeking investment to develop a solid waste treatment complex amid challenges facing the central city in dealing with the large volume of untreated solid waste.

The municipal People’s Committee coordinated with the Ministry of Construction and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to hold a workshop on May 29 to call for investment to implement the project.

Da Nang has about 850 – 900 tonnes of solid waste collected and buried at the Khanh Son landfill site each day, but only 7% – 10% of the waste are recycled.

The solid waste treatment complex project will be carried out under the public-private partnership by the municipal People’s Committee. It receives consultancy from and has its feasibility study report made by the ADB.

Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said solid waste is being buried in Da Nang, but the city has yet to thoroughly ensure the environmental issue.

“To reduce environmental pollution, Da Nang is stepping up the solid waste treatment complex project in Hoa Nhon commune of Hoa Vang district.”

To ensure the project’s smooth implementation and effective operation, it needs coordination from ministries and sectors, he noted, adding that the city is also learning about the capacity and technology of potential investors so as to soon carry out this project.

At the workshop, officials and experts in solid waste treatment, and domestic and foreign investors discussed difficulties in the project implementation, along with some solid waste treatment solutions in Vietnam and other countries.

Da Nang targets that by 2020, it will collect and treat 95 percent of the daily solid waste volume, 72 percent of which will be recycled and reused.

The city strives to collect all daily solid waste and recycle and reuse 80% of the volume by 2030.
