Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia have agreed to develop tourism as a spearhead industry to boost economic growth and reduce poverty in the three countries’ Development Triangle.

The agreement was reached at the third conference on trade, investment and tourism promotion in the Development Triangle, held in Champassak, Laos, on September 22. Government officials and businesspeople from 10 localities in the Development Triangle attended the meeting.

Vietnamese Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc noted that the three countries’ agreement to develop their shared triangle has helped promote socio-economic growth in each country and strengthen their friendship.

According to Mr Phuc, the three countries have put forward many initiatives to foster the development of the triangle following their second meeting in February 2008. They have also introduced mechanisms and policies to facilitate the cross-border flow of people and commodities, investment and trade in the area.

Delegates informed each other of their countries’ current policies, investment environment and related legal regulations and discussed ways to solve difficulties that arise in the process of implementing the signed agreements.

Established in 2004, the Development Triangle comprises Vietnam’s Central Highland provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak and Dak Nong, Laos’s provinces of Attapeu, Sekong and Saravanh, and Cambodia’s provinces of Rattanakiri, Strungstreng and Moldonkiri.
