Vietnamese students in Belgium hold congress

(VOV) -The Vietnamese Students Association in Belgium (SIVIBI) held its Second Congress for the 2014-2016 term in the capital  Brussels on March 22.

The event attracted more than 40 delegates representing nearly three hundred Vietnamese students studying in Belgium.

Established on March 26, 2011, SIVIBI organised a series of activities including sports tournaments, cultural exchange programmes, art performances, and national anniversary celebrations.

SIVIBI members also participated in teaching Vietnamese language for overseas Vietnamese children and raised funds for flood victims in Vietnam.

They were encouraged to conduct scientific research and many of them were awarded prizes in scientific competitions.

The association established close relations with other Vietnam Students Associations in France, Germany, and the Netherlands, contributing to enhancing exchanges and mutual assistance.

SIVIBI organized fundraising campaigns to provide foods, books, clean water, and school supplies for poor schools in the highlands of Vietnam.

Tran Kim Thau, an official of the Vietnam Embassy in Belgium, lauded the SIVIBI’s role in  community affairs, particularly the establishment the General Association of Vietnamese in Belgium (GAVB) in  November 2013 with a view to promoting solidarity among overseas Vietnamese and boosting contributions to their homeland.

In the next term, SIVIBI will publish a handbook for new students to gain more information about life and study in Belgium. It will also  organise regular cultural and social activities to connect all Vietnamese students in Belgium.

Currently, there are approximately 300 Vietnamese undergraduates and post-graduates in Belgium.
