St. John's University football team from New York will play V-League Hoa Phat Hanoi at Hang Day Stadium on June 7 in one of the US team's friendly matches in Vietnam.

The visitors, who beat HCM City's Hong Bang Community-based College 3-0 in the debut match at Thong Nhat Stadium on June 4, will face the professional team Hoa Phat Hanoi (HP-HN) in their second friendly match.

HP-HN, who defeated Mikado Nam Dinh 1-0 at Hang Day Stadium during the V-League round 19 match on June 4, will play their main squad in the clash against St. John University.

During the team manager meeting on June 6, US team representative Nguyen Phuoc Hung said the friendly matches will be a chance for the team to introduce their students to Vietnam.

"The friendly tour is a chance for us to display the American soccer technique in Vietnam as well as our University soccer team and education training programmes," Mr Hung said.

This is the first time ever an American university's soccer team play with professional Vietnamese football teams. The aim of these matches is to promote co-operation, friendship and culture exchange between St. John's University and the National Sports and Physical Training Committee of Vietnam.

During a visit to Vietnam in January, the University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sports Committee, developing the relationship between the two sides.

According to St. John University representative, Vietnamese athletes could play for the University soccer team during their training courses following the MoU, and then come back to play for Vietnam in the future.

The St. John's University team also paid a visit to SOS village in Hanoi on June 6.

As scheduled, the St. John's team will take on V-League side Mitsustar Haier Hai Phong who won the National Super Cup in January at Hai Phong's Lach Tray Stadium on June 9.
