PM Dung directs storm response

(VOV) - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has called for tireless ministry and agency effort ahead of the record-breaking Super Typhoon Haiyan, forecast to strike the central region in the next few days.

PM Dung sounded the clarion at a teleconference in Hanoi on November 8.

His November 7 notice already began ministry and agency storm preparations.

The People’s Committees of coastal cities and provinces were asked to issue urgent return to port warnings to any vessels remaining in danger zones.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) is tasked with inspecting and reinforcing dykes, dams, and other irrigation infrastructure.

The Foreign Ministry sent a diplomatic note to the Embassies of China, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia—as well as Vietnamese Embassies abroad—asking for all possible support in the event of serious emergency.

In the next 24 hours, Haiyan will move in a west to west-northwesterly direction at approximately 35 kilometres per hour.It will continue along a west-northwesterly path over the following 48­–72 hours, sustaining wind speeds as high as 150–183 kilometres per hour.

The super typhoon has already claimed at least three lives as of November 8, smashing into the Philippines’ Samar Island, about 600km northeast of its capital Manila 8.
