Deputy PM instructs post-flood response in central provinces

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang TrungHai on November 20 visited the central province of Quang Nam to inspect activities to surmount the consequences of storms and floods that have recently hit the locality.

According to Standing Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Quang Ngoc, the recent storm and flooding killed up to six local people, submerged 77,000 houses and damaged many transport and irrigation facilities. The initial damage is estimated at US$5.26 million.

The province also asked the Government to give it VND90 billion to repair schools and health care facilities, as well as provide seeds for the upcoming crop and two tonnes of Cloramin B to sterilize water sources.

Deputy PM Hai praised the province’s efforts in flood and storm prevention and control, which he said have contributed to minimising the disasters’ impacts. He asked the local authorities to provide sufficient food and hygienic water for people and prevent the spread of diseases occurring after the floods.

He then visited and presented gifts to locals in Dai Loc district, the most vulnerable area to flooding.

The same day, Deputy PM Hai also inspected the post-flood response in the central city of Da Nang.

Da Nang asked the Government to support VND100 billion for it to repair damaged river embankments, roads and irrigation works.

The Vietnam Red Cross Central Committee has also decided to provide relief aid worth US$52,600 for five central and Central Highland provinces severely affected by flooding, including Binh Dinh, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Kon Tum and Gia Lai.

The money will be used to buy food, foodstuff and necessities for poor households in these localities.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank) has announced it will support 4,000 tonnes of rice for flood victims in the three central provinces of Quang Ngai, Quang Nam and Binh Dinh.
