Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on November 19 that floods had receded in central Bangkok and the area is now safe from the worst deluge that hit the country over the past half a century.

In her weekly speech on radio and television, PM Yingluck said some areas in western and northern areas of the capital city are still flooded and the evacuating order is still effective at 24 out of 50 districts of Bangkok.

She expressed her belief that the situation will improve soon and transport in the Rama II route linking Bangkok with southern Thailand will resume early.

According to the Thai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, the floods killed nearly 600 people, damaged 7 key industrial zones and inundated at least 12 percent of the agricultural acreage by November 19.

At present, 19 cities and provinces in Thailand are still submerged, affecting the lives of over 5.4 million people.
