Vietnam pins high hopes on new UN Secretary General

Vietnam hopes that newly-elected UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres will actively mobilise resources and partnerships to successfully realise the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development as well as continue efforts to reshuffle the UN in line with its objectives and principles.

The statement was made by Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN, while delivering a speech to congratulate the new UN leader at an unofficial general meeting of the UN General Assembly with the incoming Secretary General in New York on October 19.

Nga also expressed hope that as the leading diplomat in the world, Guterres will act as a pioneer in protecting the principles of the UN Charter and international law so as to assist UN member countries in addressing disputes through peaceful measures, thus ensuring peace, security and stability in the region and the world.

According to the ambassador, the General Assembly’s ratification of the Security Council’s Resolution A/RES/71/4 showed the absolute support of all UN members for Guterres and their trust in his determination, vision, leadership and experience.

The newly elected Secretary General is also hoped to promote the UN's efforts to tackle challenges such as climate change and threats of war, conflict, terrorism and extreme violence, she added.

On this occasion, Nga also thanked the outgoing Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, for his valuable contributions during the past decade.
