Vietnam boosts cooperation with IRRI

(VOV) - Vietnam wishes to boost more effective cooperation with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to produce high-yield rice varieties and work out cultivation processes that can adapt to climate change and sea level rise.

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung issued the statement at a February reception for IRRI Director Robert S. Zeigler, who is paying a working visit to Vietnam.

Dung applauded the IRRI for providing effective support to Vietnam in the past years with up to 80 percent of high-yield rice varieties in the Mekong Delta.

In addition, the IRRI has helped Vietnam with rice growing expertise and cultivation techniques to improve rice productivity and output.

Vietnam wants to share rice growing experience with other countries and increase cooperation with the IRRI in this field, Dung said.

For his part, Zeigler expressed his pleasure at Vietnam’s achievements in agricultural development, and praised Vietnam’s strategic and practical agricultural policies.

He affirmed that the IRRI will closely cooperate with Vietnam in developing the rice growing sector, especially in responding to climate change, training agricultural experts and conducting practical rice research.
