The Vietnamese State leader made the proposal while receiving UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon following an official welcoming ceremony in Hanoi on October 28. 

Vietnam is commited to implementing the UN Resolutions, particularly the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and highly values the UN’s contributions to peacekeeping, international security, economic development and ensuring human rights, said President Triet. 

He emphasised Vietnam’s support for Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s efforts to promote inter-governmental negotiations on the reform of the UN Security Council and enhance connectivity among member organisations of the UN system towards democratisation, improving its operational efficiency and caring for member countries’ interests.

President Triet took the occasion to thank the UN for its assistance and support to Vietnam in its international integration and implementation of MDGs. 

He highlighted UN agencies’ activities in Vietnam and said he hopes the UN will continue helping Vietnam in its hunger eradication and poverty reduction programmes and in socio-economic development. 

He is confident that the UN will continue playing the central role in maintaining peace, stability and security in the world, promoting dialogue and peacefully settling disputes on the basis of respecting the principles of the UN Charter and international law. 

Vietnam also proposed the UN support the South-South cooperation mechanism and expand the “One-UN” Initiative, said President Triet. 

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed his good impression of Vietnam ’s land and people and its socio-economic development achievements. 

Vietnam is a typical nation with many good experiences in implementing MDGs and promoting the “One-UN” Initiative, said the UN leader. 

He congratulated Vietnam on the success of important events during its capacity as ASEAN Chair, which he said proved Vietnam’s increasing role and important influence in international and regional issues. 

It is time to bring the ASEAN-UN partnership to a new height based on more solid foundations, stressed the UN chief. 

He thanked Vietnam for its contributions to the success of the summit to review the 10-year implementation of the MDGs, expressing his belief that Vietnam would finalise eight MDGs in 2015. 

Vietnam has made great progress in hunger eradication and poverty reduction and socio-economic development and its tripling of GDP, said Ban Ki-moon. 

He went on to say that the international community admires and highly values Vietnam ’s achievements and hopes the country will share solutions in gaining successes. 

The UN always supports Vietnam in implementing MDGs as well as minimising the impacts of climate change, confirmed the UN leader. 

President Nguyen Minh Triet hosted a banquet in honour of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his wife on the evening of October 28.
