Can Tho: traffic accidents on the rise

The figure was reported at a working session of the National Traffic Safety Committee in Can Tho on May 23.

Causes of the accidents were said to be mainly traffic law violations, such as driving on the wrong lane and drunk driving. 

Local police said problematic transport infrastructure, like narrow or damaged roads, and ill management of road construction sites are also to be blamed for increasing accidents.

Tran Van Tam, head of the Can Tho traffic police department, noted that new rules allowing higher speed on highways is another reason behind the surging accidents. 

Vice Chairman of the National Committee for Traffic Safety Khuat Viet Hung asked the city to give priority to clearing hotspots of traffic accidents in the plan on road maintenance this year.
