Myanmar parliament passes military cooperation plan with Russia

Myanmar's Assembly of the Union (AU) on May 11 approved a military cooperation agreement with Russia following a proposal by Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Myint Nwe.

Parliamentarians supported the signing of the agreement and stressed the need to make the Myanmar armed forces into standardised, modern and effective by accessing modern military tactics and practices via bilateral training programmes with Russia.

Maj-Gen Myint Nwe said the agreement would create a new level of defence cooperation between Myanmar and Russia, while fostering dialogue and mutual understanding of defence policies related to international and regional security.

Myanmar and Russia established diplomatic ties in 1948. The two countries vowed to promote bilateral defence ties during the Russian Defence Minister's visit to Myanmar in March 2013.

At the meeting between defence ministers of Russia and ASEAN member nations in Moscow last April, Russia proposed a series of measures to develop win-win bilateral cooperation in fighting international terrorism, ensuring maritime security, overcoming disaster consequences, military medicine and defusing bombs.
