Nearly 200 tennis players will compete in the final round of the Heineken Hanoi Tennis Cup at Sao Mai Court on May 17-21.

According to the organising board, competitors from 54 clubs in the capital, including foreigners who work here, will play in knock-out format in age groups of the men's singles and doubles, women's doubles and mixed-doubles at the competition. The winner of each event will receive a trophy and a cash prize worth VND2.5 million.

At the tournament, the organising board will also present a champion cup to the best club.

According to vice chairman and general secretary of the Hanoi Tennis Federation Vu The Phiet, tennis has been the fastest growing sport in the capital in the past 10 years. “The number of tennis players has increased from 300 players with 30 courts in 1995 to 100,000 players of 54 clubs with 350 courts,” he said.

He added that the Cup has been the favoured event in Vietnam since 1999 with support from Heineken.

Next month, Hanoi will send six players to train in the Tennis Academy of Asia in Thailand in preparation for the national championships and the Asian Games in Qatar this December.
